Tips for an Amazing Campervan Trip

by | Jul 18, 2021 | Blog & Guides

Have you noticed how many people are traveling in campervans? Just look at stories in the news and on YouTube videos, and you’ll find many stories about people traveling in campervans. No matter where they are, in Alaska or even Iceland, campervans are hitting the road in unprecedented numbers!

Campervans are extremely popular vehicles, especially these days. They feature kitchens that make it easy to cook up wonderful meals on the road, comfortable beds (that feel like you’re in a hotel), and more. Camping has never been more luxurious than it is today in a campervan!

The best part is that a campervan takes you into the wild yet provides everything you need to be self-sustainable and comfortable on the trip.

Speaking of everything you need for the trip, we’ve put together a list of things to consider before heading out on the road! These are handy tips for any traveler, but especially if you’re a first-timer.

1). Make Sure You Can Drive the Vehicle

This is something not everyone stops consider, yet it’s the main thing to keep in mind! If you can’t drive the campervan, then you’re stuck. What’s more, a van can be somewhat more challenging if you’ve only driven a car. The van is larger and has a different turning radius than a car, for instance.

Another consideration is if the campervan has an automatic or manual transmission. If you’re not used to a manual transmission, then it’s best to choose a van that’s an automatic. This isn’t the time to learn how to drive a stick shift.

So, before you hire a vehicle, make sure you can drive it.

2). Enjoy the Flexibility of Campervan Trips

A campervan journey offers more flexibility than when you use other travel methods. You can stop when you want to, where you want to, unlike being on a guided tour. What’s more, you can take all the comforts of home needed for the trip. You have the flexibility to do and see what you want when you want. What could better?

So, when you’re on the road and see a place you’d like to visit or take a hike, it’s OK. Take advantage of the flexibility you have with a campervan. Enjoy the freedom of a road trip and doing what you like!

3). Enjoy the Flexibility, But Still Do Some Planning

Having the freedom to go where and when you want is great! However, it’s still a good idea to do some planning for your trip. Because campervans are so popular, you may need to check ahead and see if campsites have spots available during your holiday.

While you don’t need to create an exact plan, do take some effort to consider where you’ll stay and when. Then check to make sure the campsites and other facilities are open and have space. You’ll save a lot of trouble when you’re on the road by planning ahead. But don’t forget to enjoy the freedom!

4). Taking Along a Great Companion

Next, consider who you’d like to take a long on your campervan holiday! You’ll be in a small space, so make sure it’s someone you really love/like. Choose your partner, a family member, or friends to come along. But make sure you’ll be able to deal with them in a tight space.

Campervan trips are quite cosy when it comes to space. This can be wonderful when you take the right person with you on the trip.

5). Check Your Gear Before the Trip

Before leaving on your trip, make sure to create a list of what you’ll need to take along. Once you’re on the road, it may be difficult to find what you need.

When you go to pick up the camper, it’s also a good idea to look inside to see what’s there. Make sure the vehicle has everything that’s supposed to be included. And if you find anything that seems to be missing, then ask about it.

Once you have the keys in hand, take out the list you created and recheck the list. Now’s the perfect time to see if anything’s missing from the list or if there are things you can leave at home.

And remember to check your personal care items and other essentials. There’s nothing worse than find you’ve left the shampoo and shower gel at home! These may not be available, especially if you prefer a certain brand or are wild camping.

Preparation is crucial before heading out on a campervan holiday. You want to be ready for anything and make sure that you have everything needed for a safe, fun trip.

6). Plan Your Meals

Camping is a great way to save money when you’re out on the road. You can enjoy some amazing homecooked meals while saving money not eating at restaurants. Plus, you can take in the scenery as you cook in the woods. What could be better than a forest setting, with a small stream burbling close by as you cook your meals?

OK—back to the job at hand! Meal planning before your trip can save you a lot of time and money. For one thing, food may be cheaper where you live. For another, you can find the specific ingredients you’re used to near home. On the road, you may not be able to find these.

So, make a list of meals you’d like to cook and eat while on your campervan holiday. Once you have the list ready, head off to the grocery store and buy what you’ll need. This way, you’ll be prepared and will have food to eat. Not planning and buying ahead may mean you could miss a meal or two until you can find a grocery store on the trip!

7). Bring Extra Snacks

While we’re on the topic of food, don’t forget to pack some extra snacks. A campervan trip means you’ll be more active. This can lead to increased hunger due to the extra calories you’re expending.

Consider packing trail mix, sandwich fixings, and more that you can eat on the go or when relaxing. And you’ll want special treats for when you sit around the campfire!

There you have it! These are some tips to make sure you have a great time on your trip and that you have everything needed with you, too.

Most of all, remember to enjoy your campervan holiday! A campervan trip provides you all the flexibility and freedom that other types of holidays don’t. So, take advantage of that freedom and have a great time!
